If you’re experiencing teeth grinding (bruxism), a dentist can help diagnose the cause and provide treatments to protect your teeth and relieve symptoms.

One of the most common treatments of teeth grinding is a custom mouth guard worn at night.

An impression of your mouth is taken and a bespoke teeth grinding guard constructed by the laboratory. This creates the best-fit mouth protector.

The goal of the appointment is to provide a comfortable, custom-made mouth guard for sleeping that protects your teeth from grinding and relieves pressure on your jaw muscles at night.

  1. Dental Examination: Your dentist will first examine your teeth, gums, and jaw. They will look for signs of teeth grinding, such as worn enamel, tooth sensitivity, jaw tension, or small cracks in the teeth.

This helps confirm whether a mouth guard is the right solution.
  2. Discussion of Symptoms: You may be asked about symptoms like: jaw pain or stiffness, morning headaches, sleep disturbances, clenching or grinding at night (bruxism).

This helps the dentist decide which type of guard will work best.
  3. Taking Dental Impressions: To create a custom mouth guard, the dentist records the exact shape of your teeth. This can be done by taking a traditional impression using a soft dental putty in a tray, or using a digital intraoral scanner to create a 3D image of your teeth.

These records are sent to a dental laboratory to fabricate the mouth guard.
  4. Mouth Guard Fitting Appointment: Once the guard is ready (usually within 1–2 weeks), you return to the practice.

The dentist will check that the mouth guard fits securely and ensure it feels comfortable when biting and closing your mouth or make small adjustments if needed.
  5. Care Instructions: before you leave, the dentist will explain how to: wear the guard correctly (usually at night), clean and store it properly and maintain it so it lasts longer.
  6. Follow-Up: Sometimes a short follow-up visit is recommended to check comfort and ensure the guard is effectively reducing grinding or jaw strain.
